The Greatest Country on Earth, unless you’re sick.

I’m absolutely pissed at the Arizona and United States government.

I’ve been tutoring this wonderful, brilliant woman. The last appointment we had she had to cancel, and told me simply that she had to go to the emergency room. I found out today it was because she had a series of seizures.

The reason she had these seizures? Because she’s an epileptic and the Arizona government took her off AHCCCS (pronounced “access”, a program meant to provide health insurance for poor and lower middle class individuals) because she’s unmarried and has no children.

Without AHCCCS she can’t afford her $3000 per month generic medicine. She suffers daily epileptic episodes now - that had completely disappeared - because the Arizona government deems her not needy enough. Oh no, but had she birthed a child or rushed into a useless marriage she would be needy enough.

This woman, who has immigrated to the USA from a developing country, made the great point that had her family moved to Canada, her medicine would be free. Had she stayed in her country of birth, surgeries would $100 and medication would be cheap as dirt. But here, in the “greatest country on Earth”, she not only can’t afford the medication she needs but can’t even get assistance from her own state government.

That’s what she gets for becoming a citizen of this wonderful country.
